Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find a hill with a moderate incline (15-20% grade).
  2. Warm up with 10 minutes of walking on flat ground.
  3. Lope up the hill at moderate speed. The uphill forces the horse's hindquarters to work harder.
  4. Walk down the hill and around to the bottom for recovery.
  5. Repeat the uphill lope 3-5 times. Each sprint should be about 100-150 feet.
  6. Cool down with 10 minutes of walking. This is very demanding — don't overdo it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sprinting downhill, which is dangerous for the horse's front legs.
  • Too many repetitions without adequate recovery.
  • Doing hill sprints more than once a week.
  • Not warming up before high-intensity hill work.

Variations & Progressions

  • Progress to galloping uphill for maximum power development.
  • Alternate lope and jog up the hill for interval training.
  • Track the horse's recovery time between sprints to monitor fitness improvement.
Tip: Hill sprints build the explosive power needed for acceleration out of barrel turns. It's the most effective strength exercise for barrel horses.
