Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. After mastering the walk pattern, jog the entire barrel pattern.
  2. Approach the first barrel at the jog. The approach angle is critical — come in slightly wide, not tight.
  3. Circle the first barrel at the jog, maintaining an even distance of 3-4 feet from the barrel.
  4. Jog to the second barrel. Cross the arena in a straight line between barrels 1 and 2.
  5. Circle the second barrel, then jog to the third. Circle and jog home.
  6. The jog reveals any pattern accuracy issues that were hidden at the walk.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The horse anticipating speed and breaking into a lope.
  • Turns around the barrels being too wide (wasting time) or too tight (risk of knocking).
  • Not maintaining a consistent jog throughout the pattern.
  • The approach to each barrel being different each time instead of consistent.

Variations & Progressions

  • Time your jog pattern to establish a baseline. Track improvement.
  • Jog the pattern in the opposite direction (left-right-right) for balance training.
  • Add a halt after each barrel before proceeding to the next.
Tip: The jog pattern is your diagnostic tool. Watch for where the horse drifts, rushes, or drops shoulder — these are the spots that need work.
