Keyhole Pattern
Focus: Speed, Control, Precision
Equipment: Cones or poles to mark keyhole outline
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mark out a keyhole shape: a narrow corridor (8 feet wide, 20 feet long) leading to a circle (20 feet diameter).
- Sprint down the corridor into the circle. Perform a 360-degree turn inside the circle.
- Sprint back down the corridor without stepping outside the marked boundaries.
- The challenge: maximum speed on the straight sections, maximum control in the circle.
- Practice at the walk first to learn the pattern and boundaries.
- Progress through jog and lope before attempting at speed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Stepping outside the keyhole boundaries (disqualification in competition).
- The turn in the circle being too wide and touching the boundary.
- Not enough rate before the circle, arriving too fast to turn.
- The horse refusing to sprint back down the corridor after the turn.
Variations & Progressions
- Time the pattern and track improvement.
- Practice the turn in isolation (circle only) for technique.
- Widen the corridor and circle for beginners, narrow for advanced riders.
Tip: The keyhole tests two opposite skills: raw speed and precise control. It's the perfect combination exercise for speed horses.
