Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In barrel racing, the horse must change leads between barrels for balance and speed.
  2. Practice flying lead changes on a straight line between barrel positions (no barrels needed at first).
  3. Sitting Trot on the right lead, then ask for a flying change to the left lead at the midpoint.
  4. The change should happen in one stride. Both front and hind legs switch together.
  5. Practice changes in both directions: right to left and left to right.
  6. Once clean on a straight line, practice lead changes between actual barrels.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Late changes where only the front legs switch (disunited canter).
  • The horse anticipating changes and swapping leads without being asked.
  • Dramatic body aids from the rider that unbalance the horse.
  • Not practicing changes in both directions.

Variations & Progressions

  • Practice changes at specific points between barrels for pattern accuracy.
  • Add speed to the lead changes for competition simulation.
  • Work on automatic changes where the horse changes based on direction, not rider cue.
Tip: Clean lead changes save time between barrels because the horse is balanced for the next turn. A cross-firing horse loses tenths of a second.
