Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. This builds the cardiovascular base needed for barrel racing.
  2. Warm up with 5 minutes of walking and 5 minutes of jogging.
  3. Lope continuously for 3 minutes on the left lead. Keep a moderate pace — this is endurance, not speed.
  4. Walk for 2 minutes recovery. Check the horse's breathing.
  5. Lope continuously for 3 minutes on the right lead.
  6. Walk for 2 minutes. Repeat the set 2-3 times total.
  7. Cool down with 10 minutes of walking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Loping too fast — this is a conditioning exercise, not a speed drill.
  • Not providing enough recovery between sets.
  • Skipping the warm-up and going straight to loping.
  • Working only on one lead.

Variations & Progressions

  • Increase lope duration: 4 minutes, then 5 minutes as fitness improves.
  • Add trot intervals between lope sets for variety.
  • Combine with hill work for enhanced conditioning.
Tip: Barrel horses need a strong cardiovascular base. A horse that tires in the third turn drops barrels. Conditioning prevents that.
