Loping the Barrel Pattern at 50% Speed at the Collected Trot
Focus: Speed Control, Pattern Accuracy, Turns
Equipment: 3 barrels, Splint boots, Bell boots
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Boot your horse for protection. Collected Trot the pattern at about half your competition speed.
- Focus on correct positioning: approach each barrel from the outside, then turn tight.
- The pocket — the space between the barrel and the horse's body at the start of the turn — should be 3-4 feet.
- As you turn, your horse should rate (slow down) and collect into the turn, then accelerate out.
- The line between barrels should be as straight as possible. Any curve wastes time.
- Collected Trot the pattern 3-4 times, focusing on consistency, not speed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running too fast before mastering the turns at moderate speed.
- Not rating (slowing) before the turn, causing the horse to blow past the barrel.
- The horse dropping its shoulder into the turn instead of staying upright.
- Not protecting the horse's legs with boots during barrel work.
Variations & Progressions
- Increase speed incrementally: 60%, then 70%, then 80%.
- Have someone video your runs and compare turn quality at different speeds.
- Practice individual barrel turns (just first barrel, just second barrel) before the full pattern.
Tip: 80% of barrel racing is accuracy. A horse that makes perfect turns at moderate speed will always beat a horse that runs fast with wide turns.
