Set up a single barrel with cones marking your approach line.
Collected Trot toward the barrel on your approach line. 3-4 strides before the barrel, ask the horse to rate (collect and slow).
Use your seat (sit deep) and voice ('whoa' or 'easy') to rate. Don't jerk the reins.
The horse should compress like a coiled spring: shorter strides, lower haunches, ready to turn.
After the turn, drive forward out of the turn with your legs and voice.
Practice the rate 6-8 times. Each rate should be smoother than the last.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Waiting too long to rate, arriving at the barrel too fast to turn properly.
Rating too early, killing all momentum before the turn.
Using only the reins to rate instead of the seat and voice.
The horse not understanding the rate cue because it hasn't been trained at slower speeds first.
Variations & Progressions
Practice the rate on a straight line without a barrel to develop the cue.
Vary the distance at which you ask for the rate: 5 strides out, 4 strides, 3 strides.
Combine rate with an immediate stop for a more dramatic collection exercise.
Tip: The rate is the most important skill in barrel racing. A horse that rates smoothly can turn tight. A horse that doesn't rate will blow past the barrel.
