Run-In Speed Development
Focus: Speed, Straightness, Confidence
Equipment: 3 barrels, Timer
Step-by-Step Instructions
- The run-in is the straight line from the starting timer to the first barrel. It sets the tone for the entire run.
- Start from behind the timer line. Build speed gradually: jog to lope to gallop over 60-80 feet.
- By the time you reach the first barrel's rate point, you should be at your target speed.
- The run-in should be perfectly straight. Any drift wastes time and creates a bad approach angle.
- Practice the run-in 5-6 times without completing the full pattern. Focus only on the approach speed and straightness.
- Use cones to mark a straight lane from start to barrel 1.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting at full speed right out of the gate, causing the horse to be unbalanced at barrel 1.
- Drifting left or right on the run-in, creating a diagonal approach to barrel 1.
- Not building speed gradually, causing the horse to break into a disorganized gallop.
- Running in too fast for the horse's ability to rate at barrel 1.
Variations & Progressions
- Practice the run-in at different speed targets: 70%, 80%, 90%.
- Time just the run-in portion to track speed consistency.
- Have someone stand at the rate point and signal when your horse should be collected.
Tip: The run-in determines whether your first turn is good or bad. A controlled, building run-in leads to a perfect rate and turn.
