Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up a single barrel in the center of the arena.
  2. Walk a circle around the barrel at a distance of 6 feet. Focus on maintaining a consistent circle.
  3. Gradually decrease the circle to 4 feet from the barrel. Maintain the walk rhythm.
  4. Progress to the jog on the circle. The horse should bend around the barrel smoothly.
  5. Practice circles in both directions. Most barrel horses have a preferred turn direction.
  6. This exercise develops the turn quality without the pressure of a full pattern.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • The circle being egg-shaped instead of round.
  • The horse leaning in toward the barrel (dropping the inside shoulder).
  • Pulling the horse's head around the barrel instead of using leg to push the body.
  • Only practicing turns in the horse's easy direction.

Variations & Progressions

  • Tighten the circle to 3 feet for a more demanding turn.
  • Lope the circle for speed development.
  • Alternate circle sizes: 6 feet for 2 revolutions, then 3 feet for 1 revolution.
Tip: Perfect circles around a single barrel teach the muscle memory that transfers to the full pattern. Quality circles = quality turns.
