Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Set up 2 cones 100 feet apart. This is your sprint distance.
  2. Warm up with 5 minutes of trot and 5 minutes of trot.
  3. From a trot at cone 1, ask the horse to gallop to cone 2. This tests acceleration.
  4. At cone 2, gradually slow to a trot (don't slam to a stop).
  5. Trot back to cone 1. Rest for 2 minutes. Repeat.
  6. Do 3-5 sprints maximum. This is high-intensity work.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not warming up before sprint work.
  • Too many sprints in one session — quality over quantity.
  • Not allowing recovery between sprints (minimum 2 minutes of walking).
  • Sprinting on hard, uneven, or slippery footing.

Variations & Progressions

  • Increase the sprint distance to 150, then 200 feet as fitness improves.
  • Start from a jog instead of a walk for a different acceleration challenge.
  • Time the sprints and track improvement.
Tip: Sprint training builds fast-twitch muscle fibers. But it's the most physically demanding work you can ask of a horse. Rest days after sprint sessions are mandatory.
